Everyone is taught that, “Drugs are bad for you,” while being raised. As kids, these guidelines were always taken at face value, regardless of any reasons given. However, use of illegal substances will always continue regardless of whether they are outlawed or not. Marijuana is constantly referred to in modern media, such as music, movies, and TV. The debate to legalize marijuana in the United States of America is still raging getting exponentially more popularized throughout the years since its introduction. Since its birth, marijuana has never been a serious class A drug, but more of a recreational drug unlike cocaine or heroin . Marijuana should be uncategorized as a highly dangerous illegal drug but should be categorized with substances like alcohol and cigarettes. In fact Ruben Baler states “You can die binge-drinking five minutes after you’ve been exposed to alcohol. That isn’t going to happen with marijuana” (qtd. in Brownstein). While alcohol is both dangerous long and short term, cigarettes are linked to about a quarter million deaths each year in the US, these hazards of cigarettes develop over time (Brownstein). Marijuana’s side effects are increases in blood pressure and heart rate, along with partial coordination imbalance (DrugFacts). The drug can indirectly cause negative effects to the user, in most cases leaving the the user inclined to make decisions they wouldn’t normally make, however this is only an issue in the wrong environment.
