Your wedding day, that beautiful white dress, the ceremony, and you can’t forget the reception, after party. The day most little girls fantasized about and plan out before they even get their driver’s license. Getting married is a dream and end goal for a lot of men and women. Of course, finding your “true love” and being with them for life is a sweet deal, but what is the benefit of actually getting hitched? Most studies go on to show that married people live better lives physically, and emotionally. Not only are these married people happier but this partnership comes with financial benefits too. Marriage means that there is usually two people earning an income, accumulating more wealth, increasing thier annual household income. The two partners benefit but as well as their children. Children that come from married households statistically do better socially and are physically healthier. These statistics are just general. What about little Black girls? Do they have this same fantasy, or think about how beneficial marriage can be? Without a good representation of marriage or successful marriages in the African-American community most of our young girls don’t aspire to become wives. There are plenty of Black princesses in the kingdom prepared to be Queens, but where are all my Black princes?
