Topic: Minimum wage in that it does not need to increase in Maine or in the nation.

I chose to focus on the minimum wage because it does not need to be raised, and because many people think it does. People don't see how it will hurt them and many others more then it would help. This topic is important to me because my father owns a few small businesses and I know a minimum wage increase would greatly hurt him, which would affect all his workers for the worse. I have noticed there has been a lot of controversy in this topic as whether to increase it or not. If it is raised it will hurt the economy, businesses, and even the same workers its supposed to help. History shows that in the past raising the minimum wage causes inflation. The first minimum wage was $0.25 in 1938. This would be $3.98 in todays money. It since then has gone up slowly 22 times, fluctuating up and down in todays money. Since 2009 the federal minimum wage has been $7.25. This law came into place with The Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 (FLSA). Along with minimum wage, this act brought 3 other laws/restrictions. Extra pay for working overtime, restrictions on the employment of children, and other record keeping requirements. Although their is a federal minimum wage, many states have their own minimum wage laws. Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee and South Carolina do not have any minimum wage laws. Wyoming and Georgia have a minimum wage but it is less then the federal minimum wage.14 states have their minimum wage set at the same as the federal’s minimum wage.
