According CNN’s article “NFL Concussion Fun Facts,” there have been 692 combined concussions diagnosed throughout the preseason and regular season in the NFL over the past 3 years. It may be evident by these numbers that the NFL has a major problem with players getting concussions, and over the years their concussion protocol has been questioned by former players and other people around the football community. Ken Belson stated in his article “Brain Trauma to Affect One in Three Players, N.F.L. Agrees,“ that a third of retired football players are subject to long term brain issues, these issues may include the disease known as CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) which has been brought to light in a more recent time. CTE has effected a good
In the same article written by Jason M. Breslow, he shows how uncaring the NFL is being, “In at least 86 instances during 2012, a player returned from his concussion without missing a game. In 2013, it happened 74 times. 49.5% of players never missed a game after a concussion.”. The NFL doesn’t care about the wellbeing of its players, they only care about the money they make from them. As long as the player says the almighty words of “I’m okay”, then they are allowed back in the game.
In the true story based movie and the documentary, the dangers of head injuries in football are laid out for the viewer. Dr. Bennet Omalu discovered the brain injury chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE; however, the NFL was in denial about the effects football had on the brain and had on causing CTE. I believe that the NFL’s denial to the accusations were detrimental to many football players and that serious consideration should be taken into the way football is played overall. When Dr. Omalu originally diagnosed CTE on Mike Webster and the NFL denied that football was the cause for his death and disease.
The NFL commissioner needs to make the players and college athletes aware that they care about their players and care about their health, the Concussion Protocol does just that with showing the players that they will go drastic measures to make sure and keep them safe. For example, the NFL’s commissioner allowing the players to protest during the national anthem. The commissioner allowed the players to speak there beliefs during the national anthem before every game by either allowing them to stand, lock arms with teammates, or sit. The players were not criticized by the commissioner, but were by the President of the United States, and even then the commissioner stood up for their beliefs. The commissioner stated during the whole propaganda that he “...would like zero players to protest during anthem, but it won’t force any rules to change and will support players and their beliefs…,”(Martinez, Peter).
I. Introduction A. Attention Graber: For many people there is nothing better on a crisp cool Sunday afternoon, than sitting down and enjoying a good football game. The NFL, hosts usually the football games people watch. Recently, however the NFL has had a huge conflict on its hands regarding player health and safety, specifically regarding repeated head injury and concussions. Research indicates, the NFL has not done enough to protect its players from the damage of repeated head injury B. Ethos Statement:
Concussions and CTE are a main concern when it comes to player safety. The NFL is always looking for which helmet will provide players with the most protection. Labs test helmets to see which ones can provide adequate support by pounding them with strong, repeated force and analyzing the data. Fans, teams, and the NFL want to see their best players on the field every week. It is a gut-wrenching feeling when you look at ESPN on your phone and see a star player will be out for a significant amount of time because of an injury.
Concussions are an increasingly hot topic in sports. No sport is immune to concussion. Though certain sports have higher risks of head trauma, all athletes are put at a risk. Although sports can be enjoyable, stress relieving, competitive, and a way of staying physically fit, awareness for the injury has soared over the years. Being the MVP of an all star sports team is a breathtaking title that only all players of adroitness can dream of.
The need for players to be checked often should be mandatory and administered more often to keep players safe. As coaches and trainers find out more about concussions so does the testing improve on athletes. Traumatic brain injuries affect all those who play in physical sports. One study says, “They can cause symptoms such as loss of consciousness, confusion, and headache, as well as long-term side effects.” (“Sports-Related”).
The NFL needs to follow the same concussion protocol as the lower levels of the sport. THe sport could be much safer and it should be much safer. Players deserve more protection and it should be much easier to play the sport without having any
There are lots of different kind of football team that grew up with different culture and some have good sportsmanship and others are dirty. Most concussions come from illegal and dirty hits and that is biggest reason why people get concussions because they are not playing by the rules. This is up to the coaches to teach and they need to “practice good sportsmanship... Teaching good sportsmanship is part of good coaching and good parenting minimizing unnecessary aggression on the field”(Concussion Prevention). The main focus for a coach coaching their team is playing with good sportsmanship and the NCAA and NFL have become a lot stricter with illegal hits and bad sportsmanship.
Not only are states making legal actions, but parents and doctors are stepping up to make sure athletes are ready before clearance is given. “I think we all worry about sending a kid back out there too soon. Any doctor who says otherwise is lying,” said Greg Canty, director of the Center for Sports Medicine at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. Concussions are a big issue today, and should be treated even more serious than they are. There are many viewpoints regarding this issue.
When a player takes a hit to the head they are evaluated by doctors of sports medicine. According to another article in the National Athletic Trainers Association, Inc. some ways they evaluate players on the sidelines are how straight they can walk down a line, if their pupils have dilated, asking them how many fingers they’re holding up, and by asking the players if they’re experiencing any dizziness or nausea. After players are diagnosed with a concussion they have to pass a cognitive assessment and a balance evaluation before they are allowed to return to play. So as we all can see there is plenty of evaluations and protocols that are already in place.
Redesigning the Football Helmet Head to head contact is a very serious matter. Kids, adults, and everyone in between are getting hurt in football due to the hard hits they take either in practice or games. The goal is to make football safer but people are still getting hurt and even killed. There are new helmets coming out every year but still not eliminating the problem.
Contact sports involve touching, hitting, or banging other children, which is often why children get hurt in these sports. Among teens, concussions and death have happened. While these sports increase the strength of teenagers as they partake in a school activity, the risk of injury and death is great. The health benefits of contact sports do not outweigh the risks of playing them. The leading causes of death and accidents in sports are caused by concussions.
Football should be banned in the United States because it can lead to a concussion, can cause brain damage, and can even kill you. When anyone plays football whether it’s professional, college, or high school you can get a concussion. A concussion is also known as traumatic brain injury(TBI), a concussion is caused by the violent movement or jarring the head or neck. Most cases of brain injury are concussions. People who suffer from concussions generally fully recover fast.
