The risks that come with the use of performance-enhancing drugs are unnecessary and avoidable, whereas the risks in playing sports cannot be dodged but can surely be minimized, for example wearing protective and specialized gear while practicing a certain sport. Some would argue that the use of performance-enhancing drugs should be legalized but must be regulated and used properly and safely under medical supervision, this indeed would minimize the risks involved in the use of performance-enhancing drugs in sports and it would potentially increase the performance level of an athlete or a sportsperson.
What must also be taken into consideration are the reported reasons why athletes chose to use PED’s. The obvious and extremely vague answer would be that they are looking to enhance their performance in their sport. The real question pertaining to this topic should be why athletes are looking for an advantage from PED’s. With the money that major professional sports athletes make, money is the real answer. Simply put, the better and athlete performs, the more money they will make, and the longer contracts they will be offered. The money involved with better performance can play a role in the decision of an athlete to use PED’s.
