Democrats and people with a liberal perspective on government, such as me, favor an active government when it comes to the economy, as there are many discrepancies to be corrected. Because of these discrepancies, such as companies hiding money, the government’s job would be to address this. Another economic issue between the 2 parties is on whether income tax should be progressive or regressive- based. Personal income tax should be determined by how much one earns and to keep the amount of tax we pay rational and consistent, those who earn more can afford to and should pay more. We should spend around 21% on social welfare and 19% on defense—the cut from the defense would go towards welfare. Along the same line, there should also be a cut on the number of people eligible for social security, or an overall cut on the budget. The money that is then available from the cut in social security should be given to the people that depend on actual welfare programs, such as TANF. This way, we aren’t spending much more on welfare, rather redistributing the money from the elderly towards the poor. Yet, we live in a society where this idea could not be enforced easily, since our leaders gain so much from our elder’s votes. If this concept of redistribution were ever to be used, our government could be relieving about 25 thousand people that are on the verge of poverty without certain government assistance, according to research done by the Economic Policy Institute.
