Each year more than one 50,000 people died from prescription overdose in the US, every day in the US, 2,500 youth (12 to 17) abuse a prescription pain reliever for the first time. People are able to get more prescription drugs without a problem when they request for more. A method that will help reduce the amount of drugs over the counter would help those who seek and need help. Certain amount of pills and should be asked questions by the pharmacist when picking up. More prescription drugs are handed over the counter without a second thought, doctors or the pharmacist don’t tend to use the database as much as it should be, the people who request more pills are more likely to sell them or overdose. Since the age group is (16 to 25) is mostly the common age known for selling drugs and also for being depressed,suicidal they are able to get pills easily. They could easily say they threw them out or lost them. i
Some causes from taking the pills is to either feel good, to be accepted by peers, improve concentration or to get high. People started to get addictive to a drug called laudanum which was used by women mostly in the 1800s since they are not suppose to be seen in bars, or with anything alcohol in their hands. Many teens think prescription drugs are safe because they were prescribed by a doctor. But taking them for nonmedical use to get high or “self-medicate” can be just as dangerous and addictive as taking illegal street drugs.
There are some consequences when taking too many pills. If someone were to take more the amount needed it’s very serious as it can cause life threatening situations, brain damage, kidney and liver damage and other health risk. Higher doses can cause impairment of memory, judgment and coordination, irritability, paranoia and suicidal thoughts. Some people experience the opposite of the intended effect, such as agitation or aggression. Also requesting refills regularly could lead to some trouble. Due to the people potential for abuse and addiction, many prescription drugs have been categorized by the US Drug Enforcement Administration in the same category
