1305 Words6 Pages
Our society is captivated everyday by the shows and sports on television. Between these shows are advertisements that display ongoing issues around the world, asking for donations to help. Now think about that game between the Lakers and the Warriors you were just watching on ESPN, for an hour athletes were playing a game but earned millions in that short amount of time. Now just think, what could happen if we placed limits on how many assets can be diverted into professional athletes to ensure that more important needs can be met in our society.

The sports market is so saturated today that if you want the very best you 'll have to pay the most. “In 1920, the U.S. Census Bureau first began tracking spending on spectator sports, estimating it at $257 million ($2.9 billion in current dollars). The consulting firm of W.R. Hambrecht reported that in 2010 that figure had increased to $22.4 billion, more than Americans spent on movies or theater”(Reiss 188-189). With some athletes like Shaquille O´Neal earning $41 million off of their first rookie contract which is more than most people make in their lifetime (Cooksey 1170). Even with golf players such as Tiger Woods, who earned a total of $790,594, or $940,420 including international tournaments (¨Tiger Woods¨ 269). In case you couldn 't tell, athletes pay rates have shifted dramatically over the past 20 years, the average pay rate of a basketball player has gone from $325,000 in 1985 to more than $4.2 million in 2000
