The world of sports has always struggled with the relationship between coach and player. With being a sports player, I have struggled with the fact of hard, unfair, or mean coaches. The fact of having unfair coaches is nothing compared to that of inappropriate coaches. To think that the world of Major League Softball is plagued with unfair circumstances between players and coaches is sad. Controversy between whether hard coaching is the best way to coach or not has been a topic for years. Some think that it is good to push players to do good and that means going to the extent of even belittling them physically or mentally. Eastern Kentucky University has opened an investigation into its Women's Softball program. This investigation was opened due to former softball player Kaitlyn Young finally coming forward with misconduct claims against her old coach Jane Worthington. Kaitlyn claims that, “She was extremely, mentally, and verbally abusive, and manipulative. She degraded us day after day, and just made me lose my love for softball.” This situation is one of many where the coach has on multiple accounts taken it way too far with coaching. This type of coaching is mentally taxing. It can lead to defamation of self and just lack of motivation to keep playing. They should not feel threatened to leave the beloved game because of coaches that are verbally abusive. An author of the Extra Inning Softball thinks this same thing. The article talks about how a young female has experienced many challenges through her life but none as extreme as to have been forced out of the sport she loves and to transfer schools multiple times. To know that yet another women athlete has been taxed so much by her coaches and left only to leave the program and is sad to me.
