When you hear the word “spies” or “secret agents” you immediately think of characters such as Jamies. Yes they do perform missions and task that need to be completed for the greater good. Although they are similar; these particular spies have a little twist. Spies during this era were used to find out secret tactics that were going to be performed by the enemy. They would have double agents to make sure that Hitler truly trusted them. Once plans were put in place, their mission would be to put Hitler down using the enemies own plan against them. Ivan Denisovich was a German spy like all of the others. Unfortunately, he was one of the ones that was caught and thrown into a prison camp. Ivan had “surrendered to the Germans with the intention of betraying his country”(Solzhenitsyn 55). He knew that he needed to earn the trust of German intelligence once free from captivity. This shows how Ivan tried to complete a task but was compromised in the process. Unfortunately, this happened to many spies. If and when spies were discovered during this era, they had two options: prison labor camp or be tortured and hung to their death. Either way they knew they were going to die. Then again the spies knew that going into the game. This is what they had signed up for and they would be willing to do pretty much anything in order to bring Hitler to the ground. Ivan fought for peoples freedom but unfortunately the Nazis had another idea put in place for him. The Germans punished Ivan by “hanging him up and whipping him.” (Solzhenitsyn 56).
