I. The Problem: Debate about Syrian Refugee settlement in the United States Images of Syrian refugees, victims of a brutal civil war since 2011, are forever burned in our consciences. No one denies the horror and despair that lies behind the eyes of Syrian children.9 The current debate that exists in America regarding whether or not to allow refugees to resettle within US borders is appalling and mystifying to some yet justified and considered necessary by others. A survey conducted in 2016 states that 54% of registered voters did not feel the USA is responsible for Syrian refugees. In fact, data points out that through the years Americans have always been hesitant to allow refugees within its borders. 6 The Syrian refugee crisis will …show more content…

Since the debate surrounding refugees is divided among clear partisan positions, sources of information are often biased and completely false. Every elected leader of the United States is tasked with a higher calling to seek and perpetuate truth, partisanship does not excuse them from this responsibility. Americans are good people no matter what their political affiliation, and Americans are people that deserve the truth. The source of truth must come from our leaders, otherwise we stop debating and waste time arguing. The power to hold America's leaders accountable lies within its citizens, that is the benefit of a democratic government, the solution to the refugee crisis lies within us as well.
