Annually thousands of immigrants migrate to our nation seeking; relief, asylum, and a chance at the American dream. But upon entering the country the majority of these dreamers are immediately denied and instead held in immigration detention facilities where their human rights are violated. Migrants should not be subjected to cruel treatment, lack of medical care, and substandard living conditions while awaiting deportation or an immigration hearing. Therefore, the U.S. needs to reform policies regarding our immigration detention system including switching to Alternatives to detention programs (release on recognizance, community support, or bond, and formal monitoring programs); these would put an end to immigrants’ human rights being infringed. …show more content…

As well as that immigrants in detention centers should be grateful the opportunity to wait for an immigration hearing while staying in the country, instead of immediately being deported is available to them. Surprisingly some of the population that is against immigration detention centers being reformed to make the lives of detained immigrants more peaceful, are foreign-born residents. J.D. Ma asserts that “Being in America is such a high privilege… you cannot easily give that privilege to somebody without going through some kind of process” (Tavernise). This explains that foreign-born residents who are now citizens feel that who illegally enter the country should be detained because they are committing a crime, and criminals do not deserve the luxury of any freedom. Neither do they deserve to be provided a sanctuary upon entering the country, that would make it easier for them to integrate into American life and one day attain citizenship. This undermines the struggle that previous immigrants have had to attain citizenship. Regardless of immigrants illegally entering the country; therefore performing a criminal act, they do not deserve to be treated
