A major concern surrounding underage drinking is the possibility of receiving a misdemeanor charge of Minor In Possession (MIP) or a Minor In Consumption (MIC). Both of these charges carry approximately the same weight and can be attached to your criminal record forever. Even though the cost of these charges are small in comparison to more harmful crimes they are nonetheless: criminal activity. While students are in college their care for receiving a minor fine, a slap on the hands, and misdemeanor is only relative to how much fun can be had while drinking and while in college, anything that will help reduce the stress of classes is seen as good as gold. They want them to be safe and for no harm to ever come their way. Underage drinking plays a large role in the safety of minors. According to the NIAAA “1,825 college students between the ages of 18 and 24 die each year from alcohol-related unintentional injuries” ("College Drinking."). Some of these deaths are the direct result of students who have gotten to drunk but decided to “sleep it off” instead of calling the police and possibly getting into some major trouble with the police and family. The current system that is set in place is meant to be a deterrent but in actuality, it is a death trap. Students do not feel safe calling the police if a friend is to drunk or if even they are too drunk themselves. They decide to fend for themselves and try to wait it out. In many cases this is the worst thing they could ever do. It ultimately leads to comatosis and in some cases death. When I got drunk at the fraternity party I should have probably went to the hospital. I was extremely sick and was on the very edge of going downhill quickly. I was to scared of the consequences I might have to face at the hospital so even I decided to wait it out.
