Lots of people love playing video games. It is super fun to win a match in Fortnite, or to beat eight-year-olds at Minecraft Hunger Games. It is a very fun hobby, but should it count as a sport? A sport is defined as “An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment”, while a video game is defined as “A game played by electronically manipulating images produced by a computer program on a monitor or other display.” Many people think that it should be a sport, but I think otherwise. My three arguments are as follows: Video games do not involve physicality or exertion, which is the definition of a sport. Video games are very similar to other activities that are certainly not sports. Video games have major contrasts with sports. To start off, video games do not require any physicality or physical exertion. The first part of the dictionary’s definition of a “sport” is “an activity involving physical exertion and skill”. For something to be labeled as any term it must fulfil the entire definition. Video games simply do not fully apply to this definition. Sure, an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment, but it does not require physical exertion or skill, therefore why would it fall under the term “sport”?
