The war on drugs is a difficult topic that needs to be discussed more often. There are many benefits to ending the war. These include adding a great deal of tax revenue from regulating the sale of drugs and ending the counterproductiveness that is happening with the continue of the war. The war on drugs is an expensive waste of resources that will never end if not given up on. This war was started over 30 years ago and hasn't been proved to affect the usage and sale in a positive way,in the past 30 years the United States has spent over one trillion of taxpayer money with nothing to show. The possible tax revenue that the United States could have received through the sale drugs is remarkable. In the state of Colorado with just the legalization of marijuana in 2016 the tax revenue surpassed 140 million in profit. If all states legalized and taxed marijuana they could all together expect to raise between 5 billion and 18 billion per year. With this being said these amounts are not tremendous but can be used to help other causes. Those numbers are just based on the legalization of marijuana and no other drug. Since the year 1980 and 2009 the amount of people prosecuted for drug relations has grown 138%. Within this time period we have spent over 1 trillion dollars to stop this yet it has just grown rapidly. The end of the war has been proven to work in other countries such as The Netherlands and Portugal. In Portugal after the decriminalization of all drugs, abuse rates have dropped by nearly 50%. The government's between the US and Portugal and both wealthy and close enough to compare.
