Every student at McLean regularly has to deal with walking through overcrowded hallways. The culprit? Lockers. We see these congested halls on a daily basis, but how often do we actually see students using the lockers that cause them? Though students are usually assigned lockers in the beginning of the school year, most students, excluding those in band and other extracurriculars, do not use them. McLean students usually use their backpacks to carry their materials for classes and very few even know what their locker combinations are, let alone where their locker is. Plenty of students are late to class because of crowded hallways. Lockers are roughly five feet tall and one foot wide, protruding from both sides of the walls take up more than one fifth of the eleven foot long hallways. Most students are content with using a backpack all day, as it gives them easy access to anything they might want or need during class, Highlander Time, or lunch. Having to get up in the middle of class to get something from a locker could cause a student to miss out on important information and disrupt the class. Carrying a backpack helps students prepare for the future, as most jobs and colleges don’t have a designated area for employees or students to keep their laptops, pens, pencils and additional materials. Backpack usage allows students to be able to arrive to class punctually and keep all of their class materials organized and at arm's reach to be able to be successful in classes. Additionally, it allows students to keep an eye on certain personal items, such as laptops, phones, chargers and money - which could possibly be stolen in a locker.
