Michael John Farrell was a poor Irish immigrant who moved to New York City after World War II and held several jobs throughout his life. Michael Farrell’s story of rags to riches can be motivating to people, like his son to attain the American Dream of success. However, in Farrell Hall, one is usually going to have mainly classes related to business. Farrell Hall does not give emphasis on classes unrelated to business. This is possibly an influence of the building’s isolation. Its physical isolation could have possibly led to its academic separation of classes. Farrell Hall is not surrounded by other buildings, but instead by trees, walkways, parking lots, and a field. This was probably intentional so it can signify the prominence of the business school to Wake Forest and its community. Its isolation can be related to its significance. Since there are not any buildings near Farrell Hall, all the recognization when looking in the building’s direction can be directed toward it as opposed to anything else. Compared to other academic areas on campus, buildings are in close proximity such as Manchester Hall, Tribble Hall, as well as Green Hall. All these places of learning are within one to two minutes apart. Similarly to the academic buildings, the housing buildings are in close proximity too. Freshman dorms such as South Hall, Luter Hall, and Johnson Hall are all located on south campus. The majority of Wake Forest University buildings are in proximity to other buildings that share the same purpose. However, Farrell Hall stands alone in isolation, away from other academic buildings. In essence, Farrell Hall is a leader in modernization on the Wake Forest campus. The isolation of Farrell adds rhetorical emphasis to the transformation of Wake Forest’s campus with the purpose of possibly keeping up with the evolution of society and regards to what is deemed “in style.” Through the emphasis on the building’s intricacy and isolation in its design, the business school within the Wake Forest University community can be promoted as well as a hard-working mentality throughout. The memorial being dedicated to Michael John Farrell, a former Irish immigrant who motivated people like his son to work hard to become successful in life, promotes the work ethic held by Michael throughout Wake Forest’s community.
