The United States of America shouldn’t have never entered the Vietnam War in 1954. The war consisted of North Vietnam trying to make South Vietnam a communist country. The US entered the war in an attempt to prevent the spread of communism. Communism was a political theory derived from Karl Marx who was a philosopher. I do not believe the US should have entered into the protracted conflict with Vietnam because it should have focused on peace instead of war and the brought pain and suffering to the Vietnamese. Millions died from the Americans actions. The war caused pain to the Vietnamese people who wanted nothing more than to be left alone. In John Kerry’s testimony before the Senate of Foreign Relations on April 22, 1971, he admitted that, “Over 150 honorably discharged and many very highly decorated veterans testified to war crimes committed in Southeast Asia.” (Kerry 1) A war crime is an action carried out during the conduct of a war that violates accepted international rules of war. “They told stories at times they had personally raped, cut off ears, cut off heads, taped wires from portable telephones to human genitals and turned up the power, cut off limbs, blown up bodies, randomly shot at civilians, razzed villages in fashion reminiscent of Genghis Khan, shot cattle and dogs for fun, poisoned food stock, and generally ravaged the countryside of South Vietnam” (Kerry 1) None of these awful things would have never happened if American was never involved in Vietnam, if it understood that we couldn't save them all or the spread of communism. John Kerry’s statement should have made the Senate understand that our troops weren't doing anything to prevent communism instead they were abusing the Vietnamese people and causing a greater complication. They weren't helping to prevent the spread of communism by any means. We as a nation should have focused on peace instead of war, bringing our troops back home to their families and loved ones. 60,000 troops died fighting for a war which they wanted no part
