Persuasive Essay: Why Dance Is A Sport

Dance is often overlooked as a sport, but what people don’t realize is it is one of the most unique and challenging sports out there. Now most of you might disagree with me but if I asked you to go take a ballet class right now I don't think you would even last a half hour. So dance is a sport.

First, it is a sport because it requires physical exertion and athleticism. I am a dancer and I am at the studio almost 35 hours a week therefore I am always making sure I am staying in shape, healthy, and avoiding injuries. To do this though I have to stretch, go on runs, fuel my body with good nutrients, and workout like any other athlete. This supports my claim because some of you may play sports like basketball or soccer and I know for a fact that before that game starts your coach makes you stretch, warm up, and practice. When competing If I don’t point my feet or straighten my legs I will get points off just like in sports like gymnastics or figure skating. These same criteria are also used to determine the winner of those competitions. This proves that dance is a sport because I am getting judged on a set of standards that is no different from other sports.

On the other hand, dance is more of a type of art since it involves emotion and storytelling through movement. OurCulture Magazine states in one of the articles “Through facial expressions, gestures, the steps taken, the music associated and the way it engages with the viewer, dance meets the requirements to place it in the category of being a form of art.” However, this argument fails to take into account the many ways dancers must train to get good strength, flexibility, and stamina, just like any other athlete has to do to be the best versions of
