In our Anaheim schools, many students do not meet their academic levels, while others do not simply meet them, but surpass them as well. They go to the same schools, yet their educational experiences can differ, also the amount of effort they put into school varies per student. The issue of why so many do not meet their academic requirements is due to insufficient learning time, some “think that extended amount of time gives you the chance as a teacher to explain things and more time for the kids to sit and digest everything that’s going on.” Students do not always maintain focus on the work in class which leads to falling behind. It can be difficult for a student to memorize everything from their studies, it is not just about their inability to focus. At KIPP the students follow protocol setup to maintain focus throughout the day. The way a person’s mind works, plays a role in how a student works in school. A student either has a fixed mindset or a growth mindset and “those with a fixed mindset are less likely than those with a growth mindset to broach problems in their relationships and try to solve them.” Those that “have a “growth mindset,” which encourages a focus on effort rather than on intelligence or talent, helps make them into high achievers in school and in life.” A study was done involving a group of students where those praised for being smart after getting correct answers on some easy challenges later refused to finish a set of the more difficult ones. The students praised for their hard work and effort welcomed more challenging problems to solve. By promoting and developing growth mindsets, the school can increase student
