Dear Mr. Wright, When struggling with something, people often think to themselves, “Nobody understands what I’m going through”. However, seeing or hearing the experience of someone else who struggles with the same thing likely brings them comfort. Knowing they are understood by the people. Similarly, many African American children are struggling with the same problem of feeling as though they are not understood. Thankfully, there is a way to provide them with the sweet spark of comfort from being appreciated. Therefore, Nordonia Hills City School District should include an African American elective course in the high school because it will help embrace African American culture in the school, assure the rights, and help students feel represented. The interview earlier mentioned continues as such, “that's the one thing about African American studies because it is cross-intersectional. Shevrin: I mean, we're not just talking about it from the perspective of the Black movement. We're talking about how this plays into other lives, how it plays into our immigrant community.And we have the potential of raising an entire generation of Black children who will not be able to see themselves represented in their own state or in education”(Treismen). In explanation, there are tons of African American students who feel as though they are not represented. By adding this elective, it would supply those students with the representation they desire, and it would also teach others how the lives of African Americans play into their lives.
