Black lives matter. The contemporary movement started in 2013 campaigns against the brutality, prejudice, and racism experienced by the African American community in America. The activist group works to unite African Americans in one common message: they will be heard and they will not be invisible. However, this idea of invisibility has been prevalent in African-American history since the Middle Passage. African Americans have continually felt forcibly unnoticed in society, played with as toys for entertainment and productivity purposes only.
After three years of this movement spreading, racial tensions are still extremely high all around the world especially in the US. “Just since election day there have been over fifty anti-black racial disputes” (Hatewatch.) Since the murder of Trayvon Martin and Mike Brown the Black Lives Matter campaign started and on election day around three to four years after the campaign had started within the space of three to four months there was fifty anti-black racial disputes. On the chart where I had picked up this information “anti-black disputes were towering over all the other racial disputes that had occurred” (Hatewatch.) It comes to show how people don’t believe black lives matter as much as other lives really proving the truth behind this movement.
After learning about the death of Emmett Till and being posed with the question of if it sparked the black lives matter movement, I would have to agree. With the social injustice Emmett Till endured it would not be right to claim the attention brought to this subject did not spark the modern day justice movement “Black Lives Matter.” First of all, the Till murder was about a fourteen year old, African American male who went down to Money, Mississippi to visit his family. While down there, Till entered a store and upon leaving he whistled at a white lady, not knowing this was considered a heinous crime. The white lady eventually told her husband about the incident, obviously, this was not appreciated so the husband decided to punish Till.
The Black Lives Matter was founded in 2013 by three African American women. It’s another social justice that has made national news for their cause. Black Lives Matter is just more than a social movement. It is an out cry for help, as a nation, as a whole. Black Lives Matter is a community.
There have been many movements in the United States in which African Americans have been the focal point for example the Selma March, the March on Washington, the civil rights movement, and even today the Black Lives Matter movement. Those movements have had a significant impact on the United States and still play a part in today’s society. Those movements still play a part in today’s society because without those movements there wouldn’t be a Black Lives Matter because African Americans wouldn’t have the courage to stand up a fight for their rights if it wasn’t for Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Rosa Parks, or the many other activists that stood up for African-American rights. Selma and the March on Washington share a big relationship to the Black Lives Matter and they are just as important to the civil rights movement.
Black lives matter, brings justice and freedom to the black people. We as blacks are easily targeted and they want us to fail and cry and mourn. They want us to fall apart, that is why we came together and created BLM. Everyone should have the right to do what they want, and everyone should be treated equally. The Black Lives Matter movement has occurred during the same time period as some of the largest grossing Black Fridays to ever occur. Yet, has negligible support and funding compared to the money spent on material things. Many Americans care more about the
Statement of Purpose In light of recent events and social media uproar, the goal of this argumentative paper is to provide a brief but comprehensive understanding to the concept of the black lives matter movement and slogan. The movement is an affirmation of Black people’s contributions to society, humanity, and their resilience in the face of oppression. (“About,” n.d.) As a result, this paper will critically examine the foundation of the movement and the validity of both sides of the argument and the media’s involvement and several other topics.
I have several lifetime goals that mean a lot to me. I really hope to accomplish them one day. Since, of course, being currently a senior in Brownsville Early College High School, and also attending the University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley. For some students look at college as a dream to attend, but I see it as an accomplishment. All the things my parents and family members will see to me as I was growing up was to prepare and work hard for my education or the degree I want, and I have.
If I’m here on TV in front of millions of american adults, it means I have something really important to tell you. Did you ever say, implicitly or explicitly, that the lyrics of African-American songs are inappropriate, especially those of rappers such as N.W.A? Statistics say that 90 percent of our population have, and most of the time it was explicitly in front of black people. Now, did you ask yourself why is the language of African-Americans inappropriate? Statistics say that 70 percent of the american population doesn’t know the reason and thinks that because we are born black, we should be bad.
After all the high profile police shootings and then the protests against police, many peaceful protest initiatives have sprung to life. Black Lives Matter is a group that has gained lots of recognition for their protests against racism because of their continual efforts to raise awareness for it. Black Lives Matter was a group that was created by its three founders in response to a high profile police shooting in which the officer was acquitted of all charges. Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi first created the movement “#BlackLivesMatter” as a Twitter hashtag in response to George Zimmerman’s acquittal in the Trayvon Martin shooting case, but now the group has greatly expanded. A guiding principle that the Black Lives Matter group abides by is that every black individual and human on earth has a value no matter their disabilities, sexuality, gender, and etc.
When you think of Black Lives Matter what do you think? A hate movement? Violence? Well it is in fact none of those things and this article is going to help you understand why. After the murder of Treyvon Martin in the year 2012 the Black Lives Matter movement was created in response to this unjust death.
Another crucial point that Black Lives Matter movement requires is collaboration and partnership. The movement must reach out to other organizations across the nation to support and stand for Black people. Effective protesters need to have a variety of ways for families, youth and communities to be involved. They need to create partnership with local churches, schools, agencies and organizations and draw on the strength of the community wide collaboration. Social movement is multifaceted; there are different ways to be involved and different levels of involvement.
Black lives matter, all lives matter. The Black Lives Matter movement has been expanding around the United States in the last few years. There are a huge number of people that are against the Black Lives Matter movement and say that the cops are just doing their job no matter what happens. When there is a news story about police brutality on black people, there are people that say that the cops are innocent and should not be held accountable for murder (Greene32).
Alicia Garza: co-creator of the #BlackLivesMatter movement (BLM) advocates that -“Black Lives Matter doesn’t mean your life isn’t important – it means that Black lives, which are seen as without value within White supremacy, are important to your liberation. Given the disproportionate impact state violence has on Black lives, we understand that when Black people in this country get free, the benefits will be wide-reaching and transformative for society as a whole. When we are able to end the hyper-criminalisation of Black people and end the poverty, control and surveillance of Black people, every single person in this world has a better shot at getting and staying free. When Black people get free, everybody gets free.” (The Conversation,2017).
