Living in today’s world is truly the greatest time to be alive, especially when it comes to cancer treatment. Due to our developed knowledge today and the resources that are available, doctors have majorly advanced in their abilities to treat the highly fatal disease. The world has not always been able to treat cancer as well as we do today, since the 1950’s cancer research and treatment has improved in tremendous ways. With today’s advances, people are able to get help on hand to battle and end their fight with cancer so that they may have a bright future. Hear it from the President himself, “Obama noted that tens of millions of people are saved from disease and infant mortality and people are living longer lives”. This proves and shows us how developed the world’s medical department has become. I for one completely agree with Obama that this time period is the best time to live in, specifically for medical reasons, I personally know this to be the truth. More and more people are surviving cancer day by day. However, back in the day, the treatment was not as effective as modern treatments and they were often much more harsh. For example, in the 50s and 60s breast cancer was often handled by performing radical mastectomy, an exceedingly deforming surgery, “increasingly radical surgery was carried out, involving removing not only the breast but also all the underlying chest muscles and lymph nodes under the arm”. Not only were cancers dealt with through hard surgeries people believed that “if it comes back then it means you didn’t do a big enough operation”.
