: I am giving this speech to convince my classmates that organ donation is a very beneficial tool and to actuate them to become organ donors.

INTRODUCTION

I. Attention-getter: How many of you are currently registered organ donors?
a. According to a survey taken by Rutgers University earlier this year, 90% of those surveyed would accept a transplant from a deceased donor (Laskow 1093). However, the American Psychological Association found that only 40% of eligible donors are registered to donate (Wood 2).
II. Thesis statement: I’m speaking to you today to try and convince some of you that organ donation is a very beneficial process, which can work to benefit everyone and is easy to sign up for.

Main Point—Organ donation can help to save lives.
A. Britannica defines organ donation as “the act of giving one or more organs, without compensation, for transplantation into someone else.”
B. Anyone can apply to be an organ donor.
1. Most minors are eligible to apply to be organ donors, however some states “only honor the decision of minors over…16” (Egendorf 23).
2. Families also serve a role in the donation process, as families of potential, unregistered donors may be contacted by a local organ procurement organization (OPO) in order to get consent to use a deceased family members organs (Egendorf 24)
C. You can register to donate when you receive your driver’s license, by joining a donor registry, or by signing a donor card (Egendorf 23).
D. It does not cost anything to donate your organs, however, there is also no reward for donating. Organ donation is considered charity, and it is against federal law to sell organs. (Egendorf 24, 28).
