This speech is in response to the article Don’t edit the human germ line published on the 12th of March, 2015 by Edward Lanphier and his colleagues, through the scientific journal Nature. The purpose of this piece is to encourage the scientific community and the youth of the world to believe that the field of human genetic engineering should be explored instead of being completely feared. The speech is given by an esteemed scientist, with worldwide recognition at the forefront of the Genetic Engineering space at an annual conference attended by various scientists from all over the world. The tone of the speech is encouraging and persuasive, as he uses both ethos and logos to appeal to the minds of his extremely rational audience.

Good evening ladies, gentlemen and …show more content…

It’s high time we took the ropes in our able hands and moved in a forward direction. Before any great progress, humanity is always afraid to take the leap. Take IVF for an example. At first, we were nervous and didn 't want to go through with the “risk”, but look at us now. IVF is a common procedure taking place in most well-equipped hospitals. The same goes for Human Germline Modification, there is of course a certain “fear” involved. A fear of being powerful and having the ability to mould ourselves, yet we have come to a stage in technology, where we should embrace this power with open arms and use it to this world’s benefit. When all else, all our medicines, antibiotics, drugs and surgeries fail, we still have one major ray of hope to ensure the existence of our race, and that is Genome Editing. I’m not saying it’s not going to be challenging and at times we would be on the brink of failure, but I’m saying its worth a shot. Thank
