Testing Men’s Emotions What turned scared, timid men into brave battle ready soldiers? During the time of the revolutionary war when men were needed to go up against the British. Thomas Paine was using persuasive writing techniques to get men to stand up and fight. In Thomas Paine’s “The Crisis No. 1” the most persuasive technique used is pathos, because it appeals to a man’s care for his family and self-pride. One example where pathos is used as the most persuasive technique in ‘The Crisis No. 1” is when Thomas Paine starts off the pamphlet with the quote “These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer solider and the sunshine patriot will in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country” (Paine 108). The quote is effective
