Peter Hessler, a writer and journalist, has written three books about China and a numerous articles in The New Yorker and National Geographic. Peter writes about his time spent living in China and his observance of their Qingming festival and ties it into ancient China beliefs. He discusses how they believed the dead functioned as an extensive bureaucracy, with those who have been dead the longest impacting the bigger issues in the living world. During the Shang dynasty the royals used Shang oracle bones as means of communicating with the unseen world. These bones paired with their passions and servants give them a step up in the next life. This story gave new information in a new way with Peter telling his personal story and connecting it
