Introduction
The 5-Minute Lesson Plan (2013), by Peter Serdyukov and Mark Ryan, offers a “5-Star Approach” for the organization of lesson plans (p. 93). The model guides teachers from the earliest stages of lesson planning (reflecting on standards considering the skills, abilities, and background of the target student population) to the post-presentation stage, where teachers evaluate the completed lesson (Serdyukov & Ryan, 2013 pp. 93-103). Although the finalized lesson plan appears in chronological order, “backward planning” may “…help the teacher focus… (and) eliminate lessons where there are too many activities that do not reinforce the main language objectives” (Haley & Austin, 2014 p. 22). Serdyukov & Ryan (2013) underscore the importance of “knowing your students” so that instruction may be tailored to meet their needs and abilities “to achieve the best outcomes” (p. 126). Extension activities are provided, including the making of a timeline, conducting additional online research, drawing a poster about the anthem, and creating a map of Baltimore Harbor (showing Fort McHenry and the positions of American and British ships).
Reflective Assessment and Evaluation: This lesson plan only includes informal discussion questions, which may serve as a formative assessment.
