Petruchio compares Kate to a fire because she is strong-willed and determined. He says with light wind, she will build up and grow strong and wild, but extreme wind will blow her fire out.

The conflicts in the taming of the shrew Dear Journal, There has been a lot of disagreements going on among me and others for different reasons, also something new about me is that I have finally gotten married to petruchio though I am still not interested in him, to make it worse he lives in a dusty old big house with many servants he matreats. Immediately after my marriage I supposed my sister we be getting married and they would expect me to come with Petruchio and see how we are coping and with no surprises we won’t not in this kind of house, I know nothing good is going to make out of this. Unlike Kat’s decision to partake in a relationship with Patrick, a man she is truly in love with, Katherine is manipulated and controlled to marry Petruchio and stay by his side. Her willpower is eliminated and she has no choice but to stay with a man who she believes has her best interests in mind. Petruchio’s abuse in Taming of the Shrew is far more than just verbal. He wants to ensure that Katherine is his subordinate that he starves her and takes away things she wants. As he states in Act IV scene i, “She ate no meat today, nor none shall eat. /
He pushes the Priest and drinks the communion wine, afterwards he brings her to his home where his servants try and feed her but he insists that its no good for her, neither the dress she wore and she doesn 't need rest. He’s using the tactic of over loving to beat her into the ground, to wear her to the bone and in a sense it’s getting Kate to respect him and come to terms she is not longer the alpha in the equation. Some may argue that in fact she’s just pretending do please him and shes secretly rebelling in her inner sense, but a person that can barely keep their eyes open has no fight left in them, she wanted to marry Petruchio (cite 2) “... She says she will see Petruchio hanged before she will marry him, but these remarks constitute the extent of her argument. She has the opportunity to say more, but she does not because in fact she wants to be married for she has met her match” Consequently, Kate doesn’t hate or despise Petruchio anymore, she may still have trouble coming to terms with her treatment, its new to her to be put in her place.
Grumio is Petruchio's servant, albeit not a very good one. According to The Taming of the Shrew, Grumio says, "Knock at the gate? O heavens! Spake you not these words plain: 'Sirrah, knock me here, rap me here, knock me well, and knock me soundly'? And come you now with 'knocking at the gate'?"
Sometimes in many books and stories, characters use their motivation to fulfill a goal they have set. These said characters can be driven by love, money, greed, or revenge. Greed and money can take a toll over someone's life very greatly and affect their mindset. In The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare, one of the main protagonists, Petruchio, is driven by his greed to find a wife and money that comes along with her. Petruchio's intentions for his marriage are very great and demanding.
She was described as a “shrew”, bring us back to the title “Taming of the Shrew”. Petruchio knew that Katherine was tamed when she finally complied with him. On the road to Padua, Petruchio "breaks" Kate. He pretends that the sun is the moon and demands that Kate go along with what he says. Then, when they encounter an old man, Petruchio pretends that the old man is young girl, which Kate also goes along
The Taming of the Shrew focuses mainly on the relationship and marriage between Petruchio, the shrew tamer, and Kate, the shrew. Kate does not follow the normal social role of conforming to what men say; instead, she is assertive against men, and such actions against men label her as a shrew. Moreover, Petruchio employs methods such as dehumanization in order to change Kate to a conformist of social binaries. For instance, he does not give her food to eat or sleep because he wants to assert his dominance over her and teach her that everything will go the way he wants it to. In the end, Kate gives a speech deeming she has changed into an obedient woman, and accepts her place in society.
Not only did men see women as unintelligent, they also saw them as weak and compliant. What made this worse was that women of higher status would have a lot of free time since they had servants to do everything. They would spend their time strolling around or doing ‘feminine hobbies’; this affirmed mens’ notion that that women were idle and did not do much, so they treated them this way. To see how dire their situation was, one must must only have to read A Midsummer Night’s Dream. While fictitious, this story does show one bit of truth, the way women were being treated during this era.

In the play “The Taming of the Shrew”, we see that society was very different from what is now. Back then the rules were much looser than how we are viewing them today. We see how the older men try to find themselves wives, but the age difference between man and woman are significantly different than what we see now. Back then, it was normal for men to marry young women or try to go after them while they were still fourteen or fifteen years old.
Kate is sworn off by her community while Petruchio gets to share a laugh with the other men, despite having arguably acted worse than her. Shakespeare intended for the viewers of the play to leave feeling guilty about the harshness Kate met; an inequality that is only apparent when done so excessively, especially considering the patriarchal forces in society at that time. Unlike Katherine, many women of that time would not have been given the opportunity to speak and act so boldly without severe punishment. In Taming of the Shrew, the gender roles affect the characters in a rather negative way, and when they surface in the play, it’s rather shocking. This essay will discuss how gender roles affect the characters in what I believe is a negative way, and how they surface in the play. In this play, the men appear to have a particular idea on how all women should behave.
Love is the most powerful emotion, making it the most dangerous. Taming of the shrew written by William Shakespeare in the late 16th Century, has had many different adaptations two of which are: The 1967 version of Taming of the shrew directed by Franco Zeffirelli and the cult classic 1999 version 10 things I hate about you both of which shine and interesting light on the play is it an act of misogyny or an act of a man liberating a woman from society. I believe that it is an act of misogyny and will be discussing this in the following presentation through the comparison of both films. In Franco Zefferelli’s version of Taming of the shrew there were many characters, but as for the difference in time periods there are only few that I would resonate with, for that reason I chose the character Bianca, as in Taming of the shrew (1967)
