Pharmaceuticals are unique in their combination of extensive government control and extreme economics (Hopper, "Pharmaceuticals: Economics and Regulation ").
According to Charles Hopper, president of Objective Insights, when considering economics pharmaceuticals use high fixed costs of development and relatively low incremental costs of production. Pharmaceutical is a research-intensive high dynamic sector, which cause of several regulations before being approved for distribution.
Drug regulations include the entire life cycle of the drug including application, generics competition, approval through marketing, and expiration. Not only does regulation controls the actual drug but it also controls how and who distributes the drug such as the …show more content…

The current state of regulation is appropriate for it ensures safety, quality, quantity, pricing, and research and development. When one be comes ill and goes to the drugstore for medication the government plays several roles in that individual purchasing medication for her illness. First the government provides the medium exchange of money, they make sure your are getting value for your money, ensure that you are actually getting medication and not sugar or flour, and make sure companies are not selling product that could harm you when consumed. Having such regulations in order for pharmaceuticals ensures that unsafe drugs will not be marketed. This also saves consumers time and money that would be used for self-research of drugs. There has been incidents that came about where drugs where not approved by the FDA but are still being marketed privately online. In this case purchases of such drugs is to the discretion for the consumer. The FDA cannot control what is being marketed privately through the internet, only what is being sold in pharmacies and in stores. To increase the control of the FDA over drugs I suggest that the government take action against companies who are disturbing drugs that are not FDA approved . Being that the FDA takes specific precaution when reviewing a drug for approval companies that may have been denied the first time around most likely only have to make a few changes for the drug to be approved. However, instead of making the proper changes they decide to market and sell the drugs online. Consumers sometimes do not do the proper research to examine whether or not the drug is FDA approved and often become ill or have reactions to the drug. If the government enforce FDA approval to all drugs then such companies will have to make the changes needed for the drug to be approved. This will reduce the number of people that consume unapproved drugs which will also decrease
