it is said in Greek mythology that the name mint came from a nymph whose name was Minthe, she was Pluto’s [Hades] girlfriend, Pluto’s wife became enraged with jealousy over her husband’s wandering eye and turned Minthe into a ground clinging plant, Pluto could not turn her back so instead he gave her the ability to sweeten the air when her leaves were crushed. Another Greek tale tells of two strangers entering a village and was treated hostile, they was not offered food or a place to stay till and old couple took pity on them. The old couples name was Philemon and Baucus, before putting the food on the table the old couple rubbed it down with mint to give a fresh clean smell, after the meal the two strangers reveal who they really was, Zeus
