Hamlet, a play written by William Shakespeare is a tragic story of a fallen and struggling hero. Shakespeare’s main character Hamlet, before the story even began, lost his father because of loathsome greed and jealousy of his uncle, Claudius. Claudius made matters worse by marrying Hamlet's mother, Gertrude. It was unknown that Claudius was the cause of King Hamlet’s death, until his ghost speaks to Hamlet about what happened and to ask Hamlet to avenge his death. Hamlet is finding out his adventure and this is his call to action. The ghost coming to hamlet gives him the opportunity to avenge his father’s death and solve the problem. Hamlet becomes the hero because he is working to solve the problem of treason in his country and avenge his father’s death. Hamlet is trying to continue his journey but cannot without his father’s help but he is also trying to cope with his father’s death. Hamlet is a hero because he is trying to expose the corruption taking place within his own government and showing Denmark what has been going on. Because of Hamlets actions and the people, he killed he is not viewed as a hero and is actually considered mad. He felt he had to kill these people to actually make a difference. Most characters that were close to Hamlet did not mind the deaths that he caused. For example, Horatio, at the time of Hamlet's death said "Now cracks a noble heart. Good night, sweet prince, and flights of angles sing thee to thy rest." (Shakespeare V.ii.397-398) In a society such as this one where actions are driven based on their religious beliefs Horatio respects his choices of murdering because of the fact that he is doing it to avenge his father’s death.
