Can someone's personality change? Phillips personality obviously changed throughout the text. In The Cay, Phillips character is revealed as he is thrown into humbling conflict and obstacles. After a plethora of events and experiences Phillip is changed from one person to a completely new one.

“Squirming and jumpin in my hand, it was small and fat. I grinned over toward Timothy. When I had fished before, it was fun. Now I felt I had done something very special. I was learning to do things all over again, by touch and feel” (Taylor 98). When Phillip caught a fish by himself, with his disability, he had truly changed and evolved as a person from someone that was scared or intimidated to someone who would now do something of great risk. This is significant because it shows his growth from being helpless to helpful and independent even with the disability.
