In the book, The Cay, by Theodore Taylor, the character Phillip has many great qualities that describe him as a character. Phillip is a young boy who lives in Willemstad. He was fleeing to panama on the S. S. Hato but the boat go torpedoed by a U-boat and they had to get on a raft to get off the boat. The raft floated to a cay and Phillip was on the island with a black man named Timothy that helped him survive since he was blind. When Timothy died, Phillip had to survive on his own and make the water catchment and hut. Phillip's special traits and qualities is that he always wants to explore, he always wanted to know what was happening, Phillip stereotypes all black people and people he is not familiar with, he always wanted help but did not want to do everything by himself, and he was always eager to find help to get off the island. Timothy knew when the hurricane was coming to the cay by smelling the wind. Timothy said, “It can make d’shot all right, all right. It b’tell us a veree bad starm is comin’, Phill-eep. A tempis’.” He said that there is a bad storm coming to the island, a hurricane. On the raft, Timothy told Phillip that everything will be ok and Phillip will get his vision
