Deeply rooted into the history of America is the battle for civil rights. The civil rights movement was a time when African Americans sought equal acceptance and opportunity for basic privileges and rights. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s African American men and women, along with whites, nonviolently fought for their civil rights goals through legal means, negotiations, petitions, and protests. As different leaders sought different outcomes, the principles and themes changed throughout the movement. Despite the different intended outcomes, most leaders of the civil rights movement based their philosophies on three common themes: moral principles, democratic principles, and patriotic constitutional principles.
