Roughly half of the population goes through a point in their lives during which their viewpoints are overlooked. These are all women, whose opinions are usually ignored throughout their teenage years due to stereotypes. People fail to see their other traits and strengths because of the “single story”, a concept presented by Chimamanda Adichie, that all teenage girls are consumed with their own image. A teen girl’s single story can be seen through the character Candace Flynn in the children’s show Phineas and Ferb, created by Jeff Marsh and Dan Povenmire. The show is about two boys, Phineas and Ferb, who want to do interesting things over the summer, so they build outrageous devices in their backyard. Their sister, Candace Flynn, recognizes the danger of the devices, but they always seem to disappear by the time she tries to show her mom. The television show Phineas and Ferb promotes the stereotype that teenage girls are superficial due to an obsession with beauty, when in reality these girls are capable and unique individuals. This stereotypes discourages girls from developing good leadership skills, which is vital to a stable future.

Throughout the series, Candace Flynn verifies with her mother that she is in charge whenever her mom leaves the house. Candace would clearly not repeat this question if she was positive the answer would not change. Therefore, she must feel unconfident in herself and believes her mother will take away her position. This paranoia of losing her power is not a healthy trait to develop. Good leaders must be confident in themselves in order to be respected or to make the right decision.
