Photography In Wartimes Wars are disgustful events in the sense that they lead to death and destruction. Wars are motivated by different reasons, but their effects often remain the same. Over the centuries, many artists have tried to capture events in war through paintings. Overtime technological advances have enabled people to bring more real and graphical images of war to the masses. Since the introduction of the camera, journalists have been able to bring more images depicting wartime experiences and consequences. Many such images have been used to inspire support for wars such in the United States during the Vietnam War. Demand for more such images coupled with technological advances have inspired more reporters to go into war zones to bring back war images. In fact, during the American Civil War scores of photographers followed the Union armies into the battlefield seeking authenticity and profit and took more than a million photographs of the war (Franklin 762). The effectiveness of war images is noted by Oliver Wendell Holmes when he says “Let him who wishes to know what war is look at this series of illustrations”, while referring to the Broadway gallery, “The Dead of Antietam” by Mathew Brady (Franklin 763).
