When I first heard of physical therapy, I did not perceive that this profession would be heavily based on the notion of “exercise is medicine”. Growing up, I was instructed to partake in 30 minutes of moderate physical activity daily; however, I never understood the scientific mechanism rather than keeping an individual healthy. Becoming serious about engaging in various forms of exercise, I swiftly learned how moving the body enhances various aspects of everyday life. Learning that exercise serves as a modality for healing is what drew me to this field. Understanding how this profession can substantially impact an individual’s life, I endeavor to help individuals return to their daily lives through individualized exercises.
Throughout my life, I have always been involved in sports and exercise. I knew I wanted to pursue physical therapy as I faced hardships participating in the activities I adored. I acquired traits of positively interacting with patients by taking them through an exercise prescription generated by Physical Therapists, conducting ultrasounds, e-stim therapy, and maintaining a safe environment. These experiences taught me the physical and personal aspects of this profession. I learned effective strategies for communicating with colleagues, being honest if unsure of prescriptions, and how to persevere when struck with obstacles. Communication is crucial in this field to ensure the exercises are comfortable, modifications if needed, and holding conversations.
