King, Stephen. It. Scribner, 1986. King’s novel is the story of seven people who try to hunt down and kill a powerful creature that hunts children. Their story is told both from the perspective of when they were children in 1958 and when they return to their hometown in 1985. They go through many ordeals together, and grow closer, before finally killing It. The novel recounts many of the issues the children must face, for example, racism, child abuse, poverty, and bullying, and shows the ways in which their friendship gives them escape. Robert. Pieces for the Left Hand. Graywolf Press, 2005. This book is comprised of 100 anecdotes concerning many aspects of life. In one particular anecdote named Koan, the narrator details the story of a woman who loses her mind after writing her dissertation on a theory she had devised. Her theory was that every word could mean everything the reader thinks of it, and that all of the supposed meanings must be equally correct. This leads to her starting to question all conversations, song lyrics, and eventually her own thoughts. The plot of this short story brings up themes of whether individuality exists, and the power of words and their connotations.
