Throughout the generations of time, women have been characterized to be inferior to men. “The Luncheon of the Boating Party” by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, is a famous painting that captures the lazy atmosphere of a perfect French Sunday afternoon. The Luncheon of the Boating Party was painted in 1881 on the terrace of the restaurant at the Maison Fournaise restaurant in Chatou. The painting illustrates fourteen men and women enjoying each others company in a casual, relaxed and indulgent manner. Renoir was a french artist who helped lead the development of impressionism. Renoir was born in 1841, Limoges France and he spent most of his life there. During his childhood years Renoir showed great interest toward the arts; particularly singing. Unfortunately, his singing career was cut short because of his family’s inability to afford his music lessons. Instead, he began to work at a porcelain factory, painting fine china, this became the building blocks of his artistry career (Lyon112). When addressing Renoir’s several paintings, we can visibly see the inconsistency of his personal style. Degas Paintings state “Renoir was also highly impressionable. Unsympathetic analyses of his work held up the considerable influence of his contemporaries, firstly Monet and later Cezanne, as proof that he was ambivalent and confused as to his own identity as an artist” (Style). All of Renoir's paintings share certain similarities; they are filled in with bright colors and are painted to be realistic. Renoir is known for drawing shadows to increase the depth of the paintings. One of his favorite things paint was the female body, he became an expert on recreating the femininity that a women gives
