3. The International Secondary and Grammar School Pierre Trudeau

3.1 The ECOLE-Foundation
The “ECOLE-Foundation for the Advancement of the French-German education” was founded in 2009 to support the intercultural exchange and education in the area around Magdeburg in Saxony-Anhalt. Its central theme is the training of students to cosmopolitans.
To achieve this goal, in the year 2000 the foundation built up a primary school, the “International Elementary School Pierre Trudeau” where the students learn French and English from the first grade on. Following this, a secondary school was founded in 2004, the “International Secondary and Grammar School Pierre Trudeau”. Both schools are in Barleben which lies in proximity to Magdeburg.

3.3 The Mission Statement
The official mission statement of the „International Secondary and Grammar School Pierre Trudeau“ is: „We live with the world. We learn from the world. We act for the world.“. One can understand this as vows to the world. Everyone who is part of the school that includes students, parents and teachers see “themselves as part of the world“ and find themselves “responsible for their social surroundings, (…) their environment and (…) the world (…)“. Furthermore, the attendees’ aim is to “get in dialog with other languages and cultures“. The schools wants to develop “cosmopolitan alumni“ that are able to understand the economic and cultural connections in the world by using the “acquire[d] (…) world languages (…) in the respective cultural context“.

The entry test I took was actually alright, it consisted of things I learned in primary school. But still I thought I would not be accepted because this was a private school that only the best people would be able to attend. When I received the acceptance letter I actually way quite proud of myself.
The first day was really intimidating: this was a new school after all and there were so many different people, students and teachers alike. Looking back, the school was a lot more diverse in terms of nationalities or skin color than my current school. I had people in my class that spoke three different languages at home because for instance they were born in Vietnam, lived for three years in Quebec and then moved to Germany. Classmates and teachers had so many stories to tell that I learned more about cultures from them than in my actual
