An artwork that presents a relationship between the natural world and humans is “Hunters in the Snow” by Pieter Bruegel the Elder in 1565 during the Renaissance period. The artwork was created out of oil paints on wood. This winter scene is part of four paintings that each depict one of the four seasons. “Hunters in the Snow” depicts a scene of hunters returning from a hunt and a small village enjoying the winter weather. The village is surrounded by a snow covered landscape that also features some mountain in the background. There are people ice-skating on a frozen lake below the hill where the hunters are standing. Even though the mountains in Pieter Bruegel's painting are not the main subject they are presented in a way where they are very noticable. In his painting the mountains are not covered by another object such as trees or human figures. In fact, the trees on the left side of the painting and the birds flying above actually create a diagonal line that leads the viewers gaze back towards the mountains. In Fan Kuan’s hanging scroll the mountains are the main subject and show their significance by hierarchy of scale as well as placement. They are centered in the middle of the scroll and are dominating to its surroundings. The two paintings are also depictions of places do that do not exist. Fan Kuan created a painting that unflawed and an ideal image of the natural world. Pieter Bruegel's painting shows a landscape that is from the Netherlands, but presents mountains of the Alps. This geographically impossible because the Alps do not reach that north up into Europe. Contextually the paintings are similar because they culture at the time of their creations, depictions natural elements and the natural world were very important. Paintings done in the High Renaissance like “Hunters in the Snow” were very popular and were regarded highly as an aspect of the art piece. “Travelers Among Mountains and Streams” also was created as an expression of Neo-Confucianism which was very wide-spread collection of ideas in
