In the year 1656 the famous painting Las Meninas was painted. It was painted by the artist Diego Velazquez, the leading artists in the Spanish Golden Age. A rendition of the painting was then drawn by the famous artist Pablo Picasso. In this essay I will be comparing and contrasting these two drawings by these famous artists.First I will talk about their similarities. One similarity in these paintings is the princess is in both of them. Another is she is wearing the same white dress in both of the paintings. A third similarity is that there is a maid that is doing something to the princess’s hand. The last similarity is that there is a pretty flower in the princess's hair.Next I will talk about the differences between the two paintings. Now I will answer the portrayal questions. I think that in Velazquez’s painting he was trying to portray that there are so many perspectives and details that you will find if you just look deeper and harder. I think this because in his painting Velazquez put a lot of hidden secrets and objects and perspectives and you can find if you look harder. For example if you look at Picasso’s face you’ll notice that he is staring right back at the viewer of the painting and if you look at the mirror you’ll notice that the king and queen are standing right where the viewer is meaning Velazquez is painting a picture of the king and queen and maybe even the viewer in the picture that he painted. I think that in Picasso’s painting he was trying to portray that royalty and riches isn’t everything. I think this because on the left side of her face she looks happy and it has pretty and nice colors and is looking at the maid which means that riches and royalty has it’s benefits but on the right side of her face you’ll see sad and dark colors which means that there are parts of riches and royalty that aren’t so great.
