The novel is about a young Cree woman Bernice Meetoos (Birdie) recalling her devasting past and visionary journey to places she has lived and the search for home and family. One of this week’s readings focused on Ch. 5, “Caged Birds,” in Professor Lytle Hernandez’s book City of Inmates: Conquest, Rebellion, and the Rise of Human Caging in Los Angeles, 1771-1965, and this chapter was particularly interesting because it further explained the development of immigration control in the United States. As a continuation from the last chapter, there was a huge emphasis in the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 and the Geary Act of 1892. This essentially prohibited Chinese laborers from immigrating to the United States, as well as eventually requiring these people to comply with regulations. “Caged Birds” encapsulates the events afterwards, as the book heads well into the early-1900’s. In the first paragraph, the author uses alliteration,”...and despite the crabbed and constricted character…” to give us an insight on the figure he is speaking about. The author also chooses these words to build up an impression and then breaks it by saying Parker was a most intensive melodist. In the second paragraph of this story, Ellison establishes what a nickname does and how it would originate. Continuing on, Ellison introduces a new fact to the audience, that jazzmen were labeled as cats because they were legends.
Vivid descriptions of the wind such as its’ “rattl[ing] the tops of garbage cans”, “dirt and dust and grime”, and “grit sting[ing] skins” create a sense of chaos that is common in the busy hustle of city life. The cold wind also “violent[ly] assault[s]” the residents of the city, allowing the reader to envision the truly excruciating and harrowing journey people in the urban setting must make regularly. Additionally, asyndeton is utilized masterfully throughout the passage to demonstrate the disarray caused by the wind. The wind finds “theater throwaways, announcements of dances and lodge meetings, the heavy waxed paper that loaves of bread had been wrapped in, the thinner waxed paper that enclosed sandwiches, old envelopes, newspapers.” This extensive list without the use of conjunctions speeds up the reading allowing a fast pace similar to the rapid attacks of the wind, enabling the reader to visualize the onslaught on the citizens.
In The Pioneers, Cooper’s main theme is destruction of the beautiful wilderness and it’s animals. In chapter XXII the ‘Slaughter of the Pigeons’ scene in The Pioneers, Cooper vividly describes the heartless and gruesome war between man and pigeon. He starts with detailed descriptions of the land so the reader can fully grasp how wonderful this part of the wilderness was. He writes, “the green wheat fields were seen in every direction, spotted with the dark and charred stumps that ad, the proceeding season, supported some of the proudest trees of the forest” (Cooper 832). Then he goes on to explain the authority of the United States symbolic bald eagle and the migration of the flocks of birds.
