How would you feel if the smartest person in the group wasn’t accepted by others and their input wasn’t valued? William Golding wrote Lord of the Flies during World War II. Piggy, a 12 year old boy who is very intelligent but suffered with the physical attributes in life. Piggy suffers from Asthma and has trouble athletically in physical activities. Piggy believes that his intelligence can positively effect the decisions being made on the island, dwells and reasons on the things other characters want to do in the novel, and rejects the others telling him to shut up, by stating his opinions in important situations which effects the novel positively. When Piggy asks the question, “Are we savages or what”, it shows that Piggy is using his character trait of reasoning. Piggy dwelled on what the other character said about using just a smoke signal to be rescued and stated his opinion by questioning the characters state of mind in the novel. Piggy questioning the other characters’ state of savagery is important because it shows that Piggy has dwelled on and reasoned that the other characters in the book are turning more and more savage. Piggy’s trait of reasoning has a positive and negative effect on the characters around him. The positive effect is that some characters can take the input and criticism by Piggy and use it for the better, while other characters can take Piggy’s input and reasoning as a threat or a way he’s questioning their intelligence. Piggy ignored the the other characters telling him to shut up and stepped up and spoke his mind during important situations. This is important to the story because it shows how Piggy ignores criticism and the characters thoughts on him by stating what he thinks during arguments or confrontations. This trait effects the other characters in a negative way because the more things Piggy states his opinion on the more things the characters can disagree and dislike Piggy for. Overall Piggy’s third trait effects the novel in a negative way because in the novel Piggy ends up dying because of opposition didn’t agree with the things he stood for and
