Any traces of normal civilization remaining on the island disappeared in the last few chapters of Golding’s novel because of their actions. After witnessing the death of Simon, Ralph and Piggy struggle to understand what happened. Ralph sees Simon’s death as murder and feels partly responsible for his death. Piggy on the other hand, tries to avoid Simon’s death because he is afraid to accept what happened and tries to blame Simon himself.
