LOTF Symbolism The book, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, is about how a group of young schoolboys in the midst of a World War, end up on a deserted island after a plane crash. The changing nature of Piggy, who is a symbol of the voice of reason, evolves from being necessary to being killed and having the reason of the island go along with him. In the beginning of the novel, Piggy is described as plump "The fat boy lowered himself over the terrace and sat down carefully, using the edge as a seat"(10), nearsighted "He wiped his glasses and adjusted them on his button nose"(11), and asthmatic "I can't swim.

The next incident occurred after the two rivalling leaders, Jack and Ralph, had an argument and the group split into two. Jack’s group had realized that they needed Piggy’s glasses to start a fire. That night Jack’s group had taunted and attacked Piggy and the other ‘biguns’ in Ralph’s group, then stole the glasses. Golding described Jack and the glasses’ fate after the incident as, “The Chief led them, trotting steadily, exulting in his achievement.
Piggy’s glasses are used to light the fire. Even though he can not see that well without them, he still usually gives them up very easily when they need to start the fire. “‘I’ll come too.’” (Golding 73) In this paragraph, Ralph takes Piggy’s glasses and says that he will bring them back.
Ralph furiously arrives to reclaim Piggy’s specs as he is useless without them, and confront Jack about the stolen fire. These reasons lead the entire confrontation to fights and pure chaos. They fight over the stolen fire and Piggy’s specs. Ralph calls Jack a thief, and Jack loses it, making the first lunge. They stand chest to chest in pure frustration.
When Jack,Roger and their tribe invaded Ralph and Piggy’s camp place Jack ended up taking Piggy’s glasses and even Ralph called Jack a thief “You could have had fire whenever you wanted. But you didn’t. You came sneaking up like a thief and stole Piggy’s glasses!” (254). The point is since Ralph and Piggy had a positive bond and Ralph wanted to get Piggy’s glasses back it shows that he really does care about Piggy and what happens to him and he cares for what was his and what is gone from Piggy since Piggy needs those glasses to see.
For example, when the boys determined that the beast lived atop the mountain where the signal fire was located, they thought they had to go without a fire in order to stay safe from the beast. Piggy quickly came up with a solution to this issue and suggested that the boys moved the fire to the beach. Although the beach did not offer the greatest visibility for the signal fire, it was still far away from where the beast presumably resided (129). Throughout the novel, Piggy repeatedly stressed the fact that the boys needed to remain together in order to survive on the island. Piggy realized that if the group were to break apart, the little bit of civilization and order the boys had left would be lost (which happened later on in the novel—after Jack broke away and started his own tribe, Simon and Piggy ended up getting
They figure out how to use these glasses to make a fire which is then used to cook and make the signal which stood for civilization on the island. The one thing Ralph reiterates is the importance of the signal fire; however, Jack makes hunting as his only priority and this leads to tension among the two. During one particular scene, Ralph and Piggy chastise Jack for leaving the fire when a ship passed and there was no signal which could had led to their rescue and with that news Jack “smacked piggy’s head. Piggy’s glasses flew off and tinkled on the rocks” (70), He takes the opportunity to not only be the first person to physically hurt another boy, but he ruins one of the only source of technology the boys had available to them. ‘Lord of the Flies’, written by William Golding is a novel that illustrates the story of a group of boys who are stranded on an island and their fight for survival. Golding’s use of symbolism with the conch, Piggy’s glasses and the pig shows us that as time progresses the boys descend further into savagery. Through the way the boys use and misuse these symbols we see their slow descent into savagery. One example of a symbol that represents the boys’ descent into savagery is Piggy’s glasses. Piggy’s glasses are an essential part of his identity, when his spectacles are first mentioned – “Been wearing specs since I was three...", we see that Piggy's been wearing his spectacles since he was very young, they are a part of him.

Piggy remains obese and different which styles him as a tranquil target of being criticized. As one of the essential characters, Golding selects to shape Piggy the more sophisticated and adult-like child in the story, he also grants Piggy to eventually turn out to be maddening to the other members. Golding uses Piggy as an objective in the direction that creates the melody of passion over reason as a gradual way through life. Golding makes Piggy overweight to compel the other characters to tease and offended him.
(page 18) The entire time they are trapped on the island, Ralph is determined to get rescued. He views a fire with a smoke signal to be the only way to be saved. Piggy's glasses are the only way the boys know to start a fire so this give him some degree of importance.
Critical Essay: How does Golding illustrate his ideas about Piggy, and convey the meaning of what he represents in Lord of the Flies? In "Lord of the Flies," William Golding uses symbolism to effectively convey meaning through Piggy’s character. Piggy represents intelligence, and civilization amongst the chaos and savagery that develops on the island. Piggy is an outsider.

Analysis of Piggy in Lord of the Flies Though physically vulnerable and socially inept, Piggy stands as the voice of reason and is the last sense of rationality and innocence among the boys. Though Piggy shows signs of low self esteem and is frequently made fun of, he is intelligent and good natured. Though he acts as Ralph’s advisor and is the most intelligent of the boys, he is often overlooked and his comments are often disregarded. Piggy represents intelligence and civilization, but also is a symbol of reason and innocence. Piggy may well be one of the most important people among the island, but is suppressed by the others, who never realize what great significance he has.
