Breaking away from Catholicism rituals, Puritan groups such as Separatists established a colony in Plymouth (Tindall & Shi, 2013). Here they were able to escape the requirements of the Church of England. As additional settlers came over from England, the religious diversity increased requiring additional colonies. The Quakers, the Jews, and the Baptists all had different religious beliefs and to remain harmonious had to settle in a completely different location, one that is now known as Rhode Island (Tindall & Shi, 2013). In this location, the settlers were able to practice their religion without fear of coercion by the government.
Puritan Separatists/Plymouth Plantation/Pilgrims/Mayflower Compact: Puritan Separatists were a group of English Puritans who left England to seek religious freedom. They first went to the Netherlands, and in 1620 to America. They were sponsored by Thomas Weston and other merchants who had received a patent for a settlement from the Virginia Company of London. Eighteen families went across the Atlantic in the Mayflower with the agreement that they would send back goods to England to pay for their new land. In November of 1620, the Mayflower landed at Plymouth, outside the bounds of Virginia.
They arrived at what was the Plymouth Plantation in Massachusetts because while living in Holland for religious reasons, their children were adapting to the Dutch lifestyle, rather than the British. "It pleased God before they came half seas over, to smite this young man with a grievous death of which he died in a desperate manner…himself was the first that was thrown overboard. "(Bradford 6) Most of the people were families who were predestined, as in they believe God's will was the answer to the reason things happen." arrived in a good harbor, and brought safely to land, they fell upon their knees and blessed the God of Heaven who brought over the perils and miseries thereof…"(Bradford 8)
The Pilgrims were interested in gaining wealth once they established their new colony. Years later, the Puritan started a colony in Massachusetts. The Puritans believed that everyone should study Christianity. The Pilgrims believe that everyone has a right to choose what religion that they want to and no one should be forced.

The New England colonies were first founded in the last 16th to 17th century as a sanctuary for differing religious groups. New England was made up of the Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Hampshire. New Hampshire, however, was formed for economic reasons instead of religious ones.
