Plato is oftentimes regarded as one of the brightest philosophers to ever exist. Therefore, it should be no surprise to anyone that he was able to craft a work of literature as deep and as meaningful as “The Allegory of a Cave”. This tale tells the story of men who are trapped in a cave and are surrounded by a world of darkness and shadows. When one of these men is liberated and set free to explore the world of light, Plato explains how this man will adjust to the world above and how his companions trapped in the cave will react to the news of his findings. In the literary work “Allegory of the Cave” by Plato, the story is crafted and put together with an emphasis on its multiple themes. In the body paragraphs below, these universal themes will be explained and analyzed. The first theme that a reader can identify from reading the Allegory is that the concept of “reality” is going to be perceived differently by different people. This theme is displayed very clearly in the story as there is a definite distinction between the way the men in the cave and the man out of the cave perceive reality.
