Rainsford a celebrated hunter falls overboard in the Caribbean and swims to a nearby island called ship trap island. A rich hunter living on the island named Zaroff takes him in and gives him food cloths and shelter. He tells him about his hunting then tells about his new animal. Rainsford realizes he means humans and is out raged when Zaroff offers to take him hunting. Zaroff sends Rainsford off with a knife a set of cloths and food then starts to hunt him.
In the story General Zaroff says,”Some he makes kings, some beggars. Me, He made a hunter” (Connell Pg. 223). This quote shows that General Zaroff is definitely a hunter, he has been a hunter for his whole life. Also in the story it shows that Rainsford is a major and famous hunter. General Zaroff mentions how he read Rainsfords books on hunting the Snow Leopard.
Rainsford swims to the island after falling off the yacht. He arrives at a small island called "Ship-Trap Island.”. On the mysterious Caribbean island, he finds a house owned by a hunter named Zaroff. Rainsford and Zaroff are both hunters but Zaroff is a world famous hunter. However, Zaroff hunts a different animal which can fight back “humans”.
General Zaroff says, “ you see, I read all books on hunting published in English, French, and Russian. I have but one passion in my life, Mr. Rainsford, and that is the hunt.” (pg) General Zaroff’s point is that he has devoted most of his life to hunting by reading and having such a strong passion. Essentially, General Zaroff is insanely passionate about hunting therefore he works very hard to be the best of the best.
Count Zaroff is a calculating killer, not only of animals, but people as well. On the first pages, when he and Rainsford were eating dinner, Zaroff is watching Rainsford eat in this new habitat Zaroff has put him in. Zaroff asks rainsford “perhaps you were surprised I recognized you... I have read all books on hunting in English, French and Russian” (Connell 45). When Rainsford goes up to his room, there are pajamas and new clothes already out for him in his exact size.
General Zaroff implies that he hunts humans on his island and Rainsford responds with, “Hunting? Great Guns, General Zaroff, What you
Great Guns, General Zaroff, what you speak of is murder” (pg.9). General Zaroff still believe that human are for hunting. After Rainsford survive the game, General was in shock that Rainsford won the game but they both decided that one of them will sleep peaceful. “One of us is to furnish a repast for the hounds. The other will sleep in this very excellent bed.
Zaroff introduces Rainsford to the most exhilarating sport of hunting humans by saying, “It supplies me with the most exciting [hunt] in the world… Every day I hunt, and I never grow bored. . .” (Connell 7). Zaroff’s actions are selfish because he only cares for his thrill and never cares how that impacts his victims. To Zaroff, Rainsford is the ultimate prey.
In the short story, The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell, the author is commenting on war in a way in which people will change and be violent to protect themselves and others, even though they understand the pain of being hunted. Rainsford, a boy who washed up on the shore of the forbidden island, was hunted by General Zaroff, a general who got disinterested in hunting animals, so he created a new game in which hunted people instead. Unfortunately, Rainsford’s arrival provided General Zaroff with new prey. Rainsford understood what it was like to be hunted by General Zaroff, but in the end, he still hunted and killed Zaroff for his own, and others to later be trapped on the island’s survival. What is a hunter and a huntee you may ask. Well look no further cause here is your answer. Based of the story “ The most dangerous game” by Richard Connell a hunter is s person or animal that hunts, and this person will be General Zaroff. One reason why he is a hunter is because in the the story when Rainsford gets trained by Zaroff to be hunted by Zaroff is what most hhunters like to do. They love to hunt a prey that is i the same skill mental area as the hunter.

Rainsford comes upon a mansion that is owned by General Zaroff. He knows of Rainsford, who is a renowned author of a book about the hunt, as well as everything and everywhere Rainsford has hunted. General Zaroff is also a hunter, but he goes to the extreme.
