Edgar Allan Poe: The Shining Example of American Literature Since the founding of America and its development by foreign forces, there have been many literature genius that have arose from this state. From poetry to novels to normal everyday pamphlets and newspapers, there have been many who could be used as the example of what American Literature stands for. But among them all, few could equal what Poe brought to the table for American writings. In class, one of the more recent authors of the American Literature history is Edgar Allen Poe. Just as the young nation had to overcome misfortunes and troubles to stand out today, so did Poe and his various works. These are not the only reasons why, to me, he is one of the greater early writers for America. He also went beyond what was written in his time and explored avenues that wasn’t explored or looked at often in his time or before. He explored the darker side of stories and poetry in his lifetime. This could have stemmed from his many very sad events in his life, but it intrigued the nation. This and his character assassination by R.W. Griswold who stated him as an “evil, dark man” only made him that much more interesting to the public. Most people wanted to see what this so called evil man wrote about to attain this uneven judgement from Griswold. While Griswold managed to convince people for years of this false things of Poe he failed to stop people’s interest in his work. If nothing else he may have helped speed up its recognition. Poe was credited for even inventing the detective novels that are so popular now in books and, lately, TV shows. He was the first to see the want for the mystery and darker side of stories and he did his best not only to provide it, but to go beyond
